The car’s dimensions, the frame and platform structure, fundamental to performance, were that of the baes model Civic’s. Even for the Type R, this region had remained unaltered.
Development of the new Civic Type R began by the team freeing themselves from past methods. The passion to build a car that is in unison with the driver’s will, that is even faster. How should the new Civic Type R look, to be true to its racing spirit? What hardware is needed? The team tackled these questions without any precepts, and relentlessly pursued the perfect front-wheel drive sports car from its foundations up.
The dramatically improved fundamentals directly translated into performance, and in April 2017, the new Civic Type R set the fastest lap time for a front-wheel drive car*1 of 7 min 43.80s at the Nurburgring*2.
At the same time, the new Civic Type R was designed with wide ranging maneuverability characteristics, to allow anyone to enjoy driving in any scene, from the track to the city.
