| Setting the Stage for Car Production A drastic increase in the standard price of crude oil was set at the OPEC meeting in June 1979, triggering a second oil crisis. This in turn hastened the worlds attention toward energy conservation, nowhere more so than in the United States, where the car market had for years been dominated by large cars.
