Since it was first introduced in 1972, the history of the Civic has been the history of the evolution of clean-running vehicles. The Civic garnered attention in 1975 when its CVCC engine became the first in the world to clear the U.S. federal Clean Air Act-which contained some of the most stringent exhaust gas regulations in effect at the time. Since then, the Civic has continued to take the lead in incorporating the latest advancements in technology, including Honda's VTEC engine, which combines high performance with fuel economy.
Now, we are pleased to announce the birth of the new Civic Hybrid, equipped with our most advanced Honda IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) System.
This hybrid system-a Honda original-employs a gasoline engine as its main power source, with electric motor/generator assist. The Civic Hybrid not only offers excellent fuel economy and environmental performance, it delivers solid driving fun. Its hybrid system is lighter and more compact than ever, for a sedan that combines highly efficient packaging with outstanding practicality. Because at Honda, we want everyone to be able to enjoy the benefits of our hybrid vehicle technology. |

The Honda IMA System is our own original hybrid system, which combines a high-output engine with electric motor/generator assist. Precisely regulated by the PCU (Power Control Unit), the motor helps out with a powerful dose of torque during acceleration and other times of heavy engine load. During cruising when engine load is low, the motor assist is turned off. Then, when the vehicle decelerates, it recharges the battery via efficient regenerative braking. The Civic Hybrid's new Honda IMA System represents a further evolution of this design concept. A 1.3-liter i-DSI lean-burn engine is combined with an ultra-thin, DC brushless motor to further improve efficiency and power output, while achieving ultra-high fuel efficiency of 29.5km/L*-best in the world for a 5-seater gasoline-powered production vehicle. The new system is so environmentally friendly that it has earned recognition as a Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle.

The VTEC Cylinder Idling System allows three of the four cylinders to be sealed off.

| Internal improvements in the magnetic coil and other areas result in a 30%
improvement in assist and regenerative torque over the motor used in the current-model
Insight, with no increase in size. |

| IMA Packaging |
The IPU's lighter, more compact design means that it can be stowed behind
the rear seat, resulting in ample seating for four adults and a 342-liter* trunk
capacity.

The lighter, more compact, more efficient PCU and battery have been combined
into a single IPU, allowing the two cooling circuits previously used to be replaced
with one. This results in a compact PCU/battery package that takes up 50% less
space (compared to Insight).
The PCU's inverter and pre-driver have been combined, for a 30% reduction in
weight and a 40% reduction in volume (compared to Insight).
The battery's modules have been made more efficient, for reduced energy loss.
The battery storage box and peripheral equipment have also been made more compact,
for a 30% reduction in volume (compared to Insight). |
