Reducing mold release agent waste at Miyagi Factory No. 1

Mold release agent is a thin, water-based liquid containing oil chemicals, with a water-to-chemicals ratio of about 50 to 1. When running this liquid through a disc dryer, the liquid is sprayed onto both sides of a heated disc, causing the water to evaporate and leaving the waste oil behind so it can be collected and discarded. Simply by converting water into steam, this process has enabled Keihin to cut waste by 160 tons per year.

Reducing emulsion waste at Miyagi Factory No. 2

Miyagi Factory No. 2 uses a treatment process called demulsification to separate wastewater containing oil droplets (an emulsion) into its oil and water constituents. The current apparatus used to carry out this process is the third generation, and was made by associates from existing supplies. After chemical separation, the supernatant (clear liquid that floats on top) is purified further through wastewater treatment and then released, while the precipitate (cloudy material on bottom) is dried and discarded as sludge.

Waste plastic recycling at Marumori Plant

After being separated by production line workers, plastic waste from plastic injection molding is loaded onto a crushing machine. The machine is used twice daily on average. The plastic parts are crushed to a uniform size and then returned to the bags they came packaged in. Turning previously discarded material into a salable commodity in this way has allowed Marumori Plant to cut waste down to zero.
