Jialing-Honda will produce and sell its 5 millionth power product in 2013.

Located some 1,600 kilometers southwest of Shanghai in the city of Chongqing is Jialing-Honda Motors Co., Ltd. (Jialing-Honda), producer and seller of Honda power equipment. The company manufactures general purpose engines and consumer products, of which it sold roughly 1 million units last year.
The Chinese power equipment market which Jialing-Honda serves continues to expand alongside the breakneck economic development taking place across the country. Demand for construction and agricultural equipment has grown year after year as a result of endless construction of housing and public facilities and moves to increase agricultural production efficiency. Major power equipment manufacturers from all over the world have production and sales operations in China, their competitiveness becoming more intense by the year. Even in such an environment, however, Honda is still seen by its rivals as the industry benchmark.
Tsuyoshi Sasae, General Manager of Jialing-Honda's sales division, said, "Honda launched its power products business in China in 2002. Sales volume was just over 6,000 units in that first year, but it grew to around 1 million units in ten year’s time thanks in part to fast economic growth. Right now we have over 160 distributors in the country, we export to 95 countries worldwide, and we expect to reach cumulative production and sales of 5 million units sometime this year."

Chongqing, home to approximately 30 million people in an area the size of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, has the largest population of any independent city* in the world.

Operation of the new plant began in October 2011. This year, its production system will be expanded to an annual capacity of 1.5 million units.

It was against this background that Jialing-Honda began operating its new plant in October 2011. Plant manager Yasushi Watanabe commented on the circumstances surrounding the company's move from the old plant.
"Jialing-Honda's venture in China first started with producing and selling motorcycles. So our first plant was given a production line for motorcycles, which isn't very efficient for producing power equipment. To raise productivity further, we needed a line that was specifically designed for producing power equipment. Also, because Chongqing's labor population was growing, apartments and houses and schools had sprung up all around the plant, which kept us from expanding beyond current capacity."
The new plant, located 40 km away from the old plant closer to the city center, was built on a 180,000-m2 plot of land—almost twice the old plant's 100,000-m2 area. Jialing-Honda furnished its new facility with not only special equipment for producing power products, but also a more efficient production system with a line for carrying out aluminum casting and machining, assembly, and shipping all in one sequence. It had ramped up production from 500,000 units at the old plant to 600,000 units in 2011, the first year of operations at the new plant; to 900,000 units in 2012; and is now undertaking plans to jump to 1.5 million units in 2013.
