WTCC World Touring Car Championship 2012
The Honda Civic WTCC appeared for the second time in the WTCC at the Shanghai International Circuit in China. This modern circuit in the suburb of Shanghai was built for the F1 Grand Prix, and this is the first time for the WTCC to visit here.
After finishing in the top ten in both Races 1 and 2 in its debut event at Suzuka, the Civic WTCC will be racing on the high-speed track with very different characteristics from the Japanese circuit this time round. While there has been no dramatic change made in the Civic, the team ran it on the set up which suited the layout of the track in the free practice sessions in the morning. As they continued finalising the set up, the Civic WTCC finished Free Practices 1 and 2 in tenth and eighth respectively.
Qualifying 1 (Q1) started at 3:30pm and Tiago posted a lap of 1:57.834 in his first attempt before he came back to the pit. Having his tyres replaced, he set the 13th fastest time (1:55.742). Then after another pit stop, he aimed for a better time in his last attempt just before the end of the session. However, he was clocked at 1:55.777 and could not improve his time, which meant he had to settle in 17th in the qualifying.
The improved balance of the car could not be reflected in the lap times during the qualifying partly because Tiago did not have the chance to use slipstream effectively –a common technique used on a high-speed track. The result of the qualifying was not as expected, but the team will be aiming to play catch-up in the races tomorrow as overtaking is easier on this track.
Race 1 will start at 2:45pm and Race 2 at 4:00pm local time on Sunday, 4 November.
