Bobryshev and Roelants Suffer Injuries in Italy

A packed and vibrant Grand Prix of Italy was again celebrated around the vast inclines of the Maggiora circuit northeast of Milan. It was, however, a difficult and incident packed race weekend for the Honda riders with Honda World Motocross’ Evgeny Bobryshev and Joel Roelants (J-Race Racing Team) both suffering serious injuries.

Bobryshev was taken to hospital for an examination on two possible broken bones in his left leg after a freak second moto incident but the thoughts of many are with J-Race Racing team’s Joel Roelants. The Belgian crashed on the first double jump of the lap in Timed Practice on Saturday and was airlifted to hospital with damage to his seventh and eighth vertebrae. After comprehensive surgery Roelants now enters a crucial post-op phase that could last up to three weeks before a clearer prognosis on the depth of feeling he will recover from the chest downwards can be determined.

Russian Bobryshev and the Honda World Motocross team came to Italy with improved confidence after a successful three day test in the same country in which the cosmopolitan HRC crew found some beneficial gains with regards to suspension set-up and engine configuration.

Bobby’s weekend began well with promising lap-times that put him among the MXGP leaders in practice and he rode to a decent fourth place in Saturday’s Qualification Heat. In the first moto (thirty minutes and two laps duration) ‘777’ held a solid fifth position on his works CRF450RW and was settling into his options to attack the top three when he made a mistake, fell and lost two slots. Clement Desalle (Suzuki) committed an error which gave Bobryshev another place and he passed Tommy Searle (Kawasaki) to end up fifth at the finish. The second moto saw his race – and potentially his season – over before it had begun. Evgeny had to slow in the third left hand turn as a rider bobbled in front of him. Putting down his left leg it was then struck from behind by another racer and the Honda man immediately pulled to the side of the track in agony.

A cursory examination led to suspicion of the break and he is likely to undergo surgery on Monday to insert a pin and begin his rehab. Bobryshev is currently eighth in the MXGP world championship standings with team-mate Max Nagl ninth and hopeful of a much needed return from a broken wrist for his home fixture next weekend.

The premier MXGP category was dominated by Antonio Cairoli (KTM) with wins in each moto and the overall classification at this tenth round of seventeen in the FIM Motocross World Championship. Completing the podium at the end of the day were Jeremy Van Horebeek (Yamaha) and Kevin Strijbos (Suzuki).

In the MX2 class Gariboldi Honda’s Tim Gajser took his works CRF250RW to fifth position overall. The Slovenian was brave, quick and effective in the first moto to pull through from a first lap ranking of tenth and move into the top four. He benefitted from Romain Febvre’s (Husqvarna) fall in the closing stages but dealt with his other peers at the sharp end of MX2 in resolute fashion. In the second outing he did not get a great start but was part of a five rider squabble for third spot and the former European and World 125 Champion fought through to fifth. Gajser now rests sixth in the points table and forty-five away from fifth place. The MX2 overall classification saw Dutch rider Jeffrey Herlings (KTM) take top spot from Arnaud Tonus (Kawasaki) and Jordi Tixier (KTM)

Honda’s elite off-road racing wing will have only a few days to prepare and take stock for round eleven of the championship as the whole circus shifts north and to the undulations of Teutschenthal for the Grand Prix of Germany on June 21-22.

Honda Comments

Roger Harvey, Honda World Motocross General Manager:
“Evgeny has been taking off to hospital with what we are told is a suspected broken tibia and fibula. He was in a fair bit of pain. He has gone to a local hospital and then we will make a plan for surgery, which will probably involve a pin or a plate. We will move him to the best place we can and the procedure it likely to be performed in Belgium.”
Tim Gajser:
Race Result: 4th/5th Championship position: 6th
“My riding was good today and I passed a lot of people. My start was a bit better in the second race and for sure this is something we need to work on. I was in the top ten and for some reason found it much tougher to overtake. There were many lines but just one fast one! I managed to get up to fifth; so overall not a bad weekend. The Honda is a great bike but we still need to improve.”
