Bobryshev Hits the Podium Again

Grey skies and autumn temperatures did not deter a buoyant crowd from travelling to the Sans Souci circuit in Bastogne for an energetic Grand Prix of Belgium. The fifteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship was claimed by Clement Desalle in the premier MX1 category but Honda World Motocross team's Evgeny Bobryshev celebrated third position for the second event in a row on the factory CRF450R.

After a Saturday program of sunshine and blue skies the weather altered for Sunday and the fine dirt of the mostly flat layout benefitted from the occasional spells of light rain throughout the day. The track mixed hard-pack and slick sections with rough and rutted zones. It was also fast and saw the MX1 and MX2 stars set a furious pace.

Bobryshev showed evidence of his increasingly better race fitness on Saturday to run to a comfortable third position in the Qualification Heat. His result permitted the Russian third pick – and he selected a slot toward the inside of the gate – for the wide start and slight drop downhill into the 180 degree left-hand first turn. ‘Bobby' negotiated the launches of the thirty-five minute and two lap moto on Sunday with reasonable getaways on both occasions. In the first outing he circulated in fourth place until a small crash saw him lose two positions. He fought back through the next seven laps to pass Kevin Strijbos and again enter the top four. Looking to better fourth spot in the second moto Bobryshev chased down David Philippaerts and swiftly gained third place, from which point he saw out the Grand Prix to register a final 4-3 scorecard and again spray podium champagne two weeks after breaching the winner's circle at Loket in the Czech Republic.

Team-mate Max Nagl remained on the sidelines with the effects of his Epstein-Barr virus not yet cleared. The fast German simply needs rest time to let his system recover and can set no firm date for a return to GP action.

Gariboldi Honda's David Philippaerts was ninth overall. The Italian was as high as sixth in the first moto until he stalled the bike and conceded a lot of ground to his pursuers. The former world champion then pushed to again climb the rankings and reached twelfth. A fantastic start in the second outing witnessed ‘19' hitting the top three for almost half the race distance. DP suffered a little with an engine bogging glitch that meant he had to push the CRF450R hard and he crossed the finish line with seventh.

The MX1 points table shows Bobryshev now up to ninth place. Nagl has missed two rounds but still sits eighth while Philippaerts is tenth.

MX2 World Champion Jeffrey Herlings, who had previously dominated all fourteen rounds, was forced out of the Grand Prix with a dislocated shoulder following a fall in Saturday's Qualification Heat making the division an open contest. Two weeks after his maiden GP podium finish, Alex Tonkov took his CRF250R to a best run of tenth in the second moto. A mechanical problem caused his retirement in the first race of the Belgian program.

The British Grand Prix – also home to the MXGP Festival with eleven categories from MX1 to Amateur to Women to European juniors – will take place next weekend and the penultimate round of the FIM Motocross World Championship will be followed by the curtain-closing trip to Lierop (Holland) for the Grand Prix of Benelux two weeks later.

Evgeny Bobryshev:
Race Result: 4th/3rd Championship position: 9th
“I'm getting more confidence race by race. I am able to do proper training now because up until one month ago my foot was still hurting. I had a good week before coming here and this is the pay-off. To be on the podium again after Loket is positive for me and we'll try to do it every weekend. We have been working on the suspension set-up because I'm quite demanding! We found some good solutions but we still need to work a bit. I'm happy with the bike but we need to keep on going to get better results; today Antonio and Clement were a little bit faster than me.”
David Philippaerts:
Race Result: 12th/7th Championship position: 10th
“Some things to feel happy about this weekend even though I am not satisfied with the first moto. I am fast and feel fit and this can be seen in the final part of that first race because I passed many riders. I stopped the bike on the fourth lap when I was sixth and that was my mistake. I pushed hard to come back from that. In the second moto I started really well and to run in third for twenty minutes was very good; I'm happy about that. Towards the end of the race I had to take the outside lines to keep the momentum with the bike and hit the bumpy lines for the jumps and the other riders were able to take smoother and better lines. Anyway I'm pleased because I know when we don't have any issues then I can stay in the top five easily. I spoke with Giacomo [Gariboldi, Team Owner] for a bit more help with the bike but I know it is not easy. We have two more races now and then we'll focus for next year.”
