Round 14 Lierop – Netherlands

LS Motors Honda riders take top ten finishes at Lierop

The penultimate round of the 2010 FIM Motocross World Championship was played out across the impossible rough and bumpy sand of Lierop for the Grand Prix of Benelux. While newly crowned World Champion Tony Cairoli notched his fifth grand prix win in a row, LS Motors Honda were able to see CRF450R riders Tanel Leok capture sixth place overall and Davide Guarneri taking tenth position in the final event classification.

The 12,000 spectators in attendance enjoyed generous Dutch sunshine while the fastest GP riders in the paddock had to deal with yet another treacherous surface that sent the machines bucking and weaving at high speed for a two minute lap.

Top performer for Honda once more was Tanel Leok who started brightly and went on to take fourth in the first moto of 35 minutes and 2 laps. The Estonian was hunting the overall podium with a similar placing in the second moto until a mistake saw him crash, lose momentum and finally register seventh. His point-haul of thirty-two was the second best since his victory in Catalunya in May; a sequence of nine meetings. Team-mate Davide Guarneri was consistent and steady on a terrain that is the not the strongest for the Italian. Ninth and eighth marked a decent days work for the former MX2 GP winner.

Martin Honda’s Jimmy Albertson was able to have his first attempt at the sand of Lierop but sadly it did not last the full distance of the opening race as the American caught his knee and was forced out of the moto and the GP. The American was joined under the awning by Australian Dean Ferris in Holland. The wild-card was skittled out of the first corner in the initial sprint and rode back to twenty-ninth, two laps down. He was unable to finish the second moto after a fall and tangle with another rider led to a broken radiator hose. Ferris will wear the ‘711’ number for the team again in Italy next week.

CAS Honda were not actively present at Lierop. Evgeny Bobryshev was able to go through the pain barrier (against doctor’s advice) last weekend to keep his hopes of the Maxxis British Championship title alive but sensibly opted on the side of caution by giving his rib and lung injury time to heal by missing the Benelux encounter. The Russian is hoping to be back on his CRF450R for the final Grand Prix of the season next weekend. The British team have parted company with Gareth Swanepoel.

In the world championship standings Honda have three riders placed in the top ten with Leok now having moved up to sixth (from where he cannot rise any higher) and Bobryshev ninth, just three points in front of Guarneri.

The Grand Prix of Italy at the revamped facility of Fermo will take place next weekend and represent the final round of the 2010 FIM Motocross World Championship.

Tanel Leok, LS Motors Honda:
“I feel pretty good about today but I made a mistake and crashed in the second moto so that was a bit disappointing. The first moto wasn’t too bad. I started well and had a decent rhythm to take fourth. The track always gets so rough here so it is never an easy GP. The jumps take-offs and landings were particularly tricky to deal with.”

Davide Guarneri, LS Motors Honda:
“Two top ten results; pretty good. The track was deep, heavy and very rough. There were many square bumps mixed with long ones and big ruts so it was really difficult. At the end it was about trying to stay on the bike and not make a big mistake. I was happy with the second moto because I did not get as tired as I expected. I lost some points to Goncalves but he is always strong here. I am a bit closer to Bobryshev and next we have Fermo. If it does not rain in Italy and I can get a good start then it will be a good race for me.”

Jimmy Albertson, Martin Honda:
“I came into this meeting with a fever and wasn’t feeling great. I hadn’t been able to prepare fully so I knew I had a hard job ahead of me. I tweaked my knee in the first moto and something did not feel right. I hate pulling in but there was no way I could make it to the flag so my priority was to get the leg checked out and make sure there was nothing wrong.”

Dean Ferris, Martin Honda:
“I knew it would be tough coming here but I was hoping for better luck than today. Someone wiped me out on the first corner of the first moto and I tried to come back from way behind the rest and then someone jumped on the bike and ripped the radiator hose in the second moto so it was over fairly quickly. Fermo should be better for me next week and I’m glad there are only a few days before I get another go.”

Roger Harvey, Honda Motor Europe Off-road Racing Manager:
“Tanel did well today and it was a bit of a shame that a few small mistakes stopped him being able to challenge for the podium. Sand is not really Davide’s surface but he held a regular speed and did pretty well. Dean was unlucky and never really had to chance to get going, while we hope Jimmy has not done anything serious to his knee. Just one round remaining now in the world championship and we go to Italy wanting to close the season with as many CFRs near the top as possible and enjoy the final outing on the calendar.”
