2009 FIM MX1 / MX2 World Motocross Championship Round 12
Grand Prix of Belgium – Lommel

Debut podium for Verbruggen in Belgium

A cloudy and showery Grand Prix of Belgium at the sandy and difficult Lommel circuit saw Ken De Dycker celebrate success in the premier MX1 category. LS Honda’s Clement Desalle, fresh from his top three finish in a recent trip to Washougal for the AMA National series, was unlucky to score 5th overall after a first moto result of 2nd at the twelfth round of fifteen in the 2009 FIM Motocross World Championship. LS Honda’s Dennis Verbruggen was able to enjoy his first ever GP podium on the CRF250R with 3rd place.

28,000 spectators travelled to the flat but long and challenging track in Belgium and were coated with rainfall as the hot and humid conditions of Saturday completely changed for race-day. The technical sand was carved into many testing bumps and ripples and saw several protagonists having to retrieve their machines from the ground throughout the 35 minute and 2 lap motos.

Desalle, starting from pole position for the second time this season on his CRF450R, aced the holeshot and tussled with De Dycker for the lead in Moto1 before securing a decent runner-up slot; his third 2nd place thus far. The 20 year old Belgian slipped off his motorcycle exiting the first corner of Moto2 and restarted virtually last. He flew up to fifth position but a damaged exhaust exceeded noise regulations and a one minute penalty meant that he classified 9th for 5th in the final listing.

Martin Honda’s Kevin Strijbos attempted his home Grand Prix despite a shoulder injury picked up one week prior to the meeting. The Belgian had recovered from his broken wrist but entered proceedings at Lommel with pain-killing injections and a physical handicap. He was Honda’s second highest rider with 12th and did not finish the second moto due to a technical problem.

CAS Honda’s Cedric Melotte was making a return after a back injury that had kept him away from the sport since round two in Bulgaria. The Belgian was 13th overall thanks to 11th place in the second race (his best finish in three grand prix with Honda). Team-mate Bryan Mackenzie was competing at Lommel for the first time. The Scot found the going tough and could not register points in either moto.

In MX2 Verbruggen recovered from two reasonable starts to collect 5th and 3rd positions for Honda’s sole trophy on Sunday. The Belgian, and former European Champion, marked a career-best with his result and gave the CRF250R its fifth podium this season.

In the championship standings Desalle is currently 5th and 4 points ahead of Josh Coppins and 4 points behind Ken De Dycker.

Round thirteen of the series will take place next weekend at the hilly Loket circuit for the Grand Prix of Czech Republic.

Clement Desalle, LS Honda:
“The first race was good and I took my first GP holeshot. I was happy with the result because I came through the moto safely and with good speed. In the second moto I was second in the first corner but then I lost the back of the bike. I recovered fast but then had a problem with the exhaust, which was really frustrating. I had a one minute penalty and that set me back; there is not much you can do!”

Kevin Strijbos, Martin Honda:
“It was hard this weekend and with all the injections and pain I was almost not going to start the second moto. The first race was not too bad but then the effect of the injection wore off and it became very difficult to go fast and keep concentrating. In the second we had a problem with one of the pipes on the bike. Overall the last week has been a hit to my confidence because I had trained and prepared so much for this GP. I should perhaps not have ridden but I wanted to come here for the team and the people to show that I am still a GP racer!”

Cedric Melotte, CAS Honda:
“I am quite pleased with the second moto. I struggled and had a crash in the first moto but it was my first GP for quite some time and I felt the pace. The last one was OK though, considering my injury. It was good to race again in Belgium.”

Bryan Mackenzie, CAS Honda:
“I hated the track yesterday: it was like nothing I had ridden before in my life but 16th in the qualification Heat wasn’t too bad. I had a poor start in the first race but made my way into the top twenty. In the last five minutes the sand got to me and I crashed and had the bike stuck on top of me for almost a minute. In the second race the start was better but I had another accident over a jump on the first lap and I think at least four other people rode over the bike and damaged the radiator. I pushed as far as I could but in the last ten minutes the bike had had enough.”

Dennis Verbruggen, LS Honda:
“This was a little unexpected but I have been working hard for the last few months and kept believing in myself. I knew I could be good in the sand and I am really happy. The team put so many hours into my bike and I had good people around me giving support. Now I will keep on working and hope to be on the podium again soon.”
