2009 FIM MX1 / MX2 World Motocross Championship Round 06
Grand Prix of Catalunya, Bellpuig

Musquin new MX2 World Championship leader

A sun-kissed Bellpuig circuit hosted the Grand Prix of Catalunya and the sixth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship as Jonathan Barragan claimed a popular home victory in the MX1 class while Belgian Jeremy Van Horebeek won the MX2 division overall in front of 20,000 spectators. The fastest Honda CRF450R on the day was again in the hands of Clement Desalle who took fifth position. But it was Marvin Musquin and his NGS Honda team who left the venue the most satisfied Honda team.

Musquin’s eleventh place on the CRF250R gave him the lead in the MX2 championship; the first time the motorcycle will wear the red plate.

The hard-pack and jumpy course became dusty throughout the day but was more a test of endurance and speed than technical ability. Sunshine and the hottest conditions encountered this season so far removed bad memories of the heavy rain that ruined the GP thirteen months ago.

CAS Honda were briefly back to full strength with Billy Mackenzie defying discomfort with his injured right thumb and Cedric Melotte returning from the back complaint that had forced him out of action from the second round in Bulgaria. Melotte sadly could not last beyond the second practice session before having to withdraw suffering from severe pain, he is now unlikely to compete again at this level until fully fit.

Mackenzie was unlucky to finish only eighth overall at Bellpuig. The Scot was in second place during the opening laps of Moto1 but was knocked to the ground in a very ambitious overtaking manoeuvre by Antonio Cairoli. The British champion was able to fight his way back to eleventh at the flag. In Moto2 he passed Max Nagl to set the pace at the front for the first half of the race but was unable to resist the speed of the hard charging group of riders in close attendance and slipped back to fifth; still, a creditable finish considering his recent physical woes.

LS Honda’s Clement Desalle held off the attentions of world champion David Philippaerts in a very strong first moto for the Belgian in which he captured a career-best second position. An average start in the second race left him with much to do but he raced through to battle with Philippaerts and De Dycker eventually crossing the finish line in seventh spot for fifth place overall.

In the MX2 contest Marvin Musquin did not enjoy his best Grand Prix of the season. A crash in Moto1 left him down in fourteenth while a better start but an inconsistent rhythm meant he was ninth later in the afternoon. Eleventh place was an unremarkable result but thanks to the fifteenth taken by rival Gautier Paulin Musquin is the new championship leader by 3 points over his fellow countryman.

In MX1 Desalle is seventh in the world championship standings, just 12 points from the top five while Mackenzie is down in fourteenth and desperately trying to regain ground.

The British Grand Prix at Mallory Park in two weeks will host round seven of fifteen in the FIM Motocross World Championships.

Clement Desalle, LS Honda:
“I had a good start in the first heat and was second after the first few corners. I felt good physically and could keep the speed and position. In the second heat I was around the top five and pushed to go with Philippaerts and De Dycker. Overall I am a bit disappointed to miss out on the podium but to come away from here with points and to avoid injury is important.”

Billy Mackenzie, CAS Honda:
“The start in the first moto was great until Cairoli attempted a crazy overtaking move that just put both of us on the floor. I don’t know what he was thinking. I was pretty angry and just rode as hard as I could. In the second race I had a nice lead at the start and settled in a rhythm which just got harder for me to maintain consistently at the end. I was making a few mistakes and fifth was the best I could do. Overall, not a fantastic day, but at least we got some points.”

Marvin Musquin, NGS Honda:
“Not the best GP for me but it is really nice to have the red plate. The track was OK at the beginning of the weekend but today is wasn’t easy because there was only one line and it was hard to overtake. I made a mistake and crashed in the first moto and then was stuck behind Aubin and lost my rhythm and concentration in the second. Mentally I should have been a bit more focussed this weekend but we will do our best to keep the red plate now.”

Roger Harvey, Off-road Racing Co-ordinator, Honda Motor Europe:
"Marvin Musquin did not get such great results today but he has taken the lead in the MX2 World Championship for the first time with the CRF250R and it just proves what we have known about the bike for many years. Good consistent and strong rides from Clement Desalle in both races while it was great to see Mackenzie back at the front. Towards the end you could just see that the thumb was bothering him but the turnaround in form was good stuff."
