CAS Honda’s Billy MacKenzie bounced back from the injuries he sustained in Loket three weeks ago to score a fighting fifth overall at the Grand Prix of Ireland in Fairyhouse during round 13 of the 2008 FIM MX1 Motocross World Championship.

The Fairyhouse venue is famous in Ireland as the home of the Grand National horse race but is completely new to the sport of motocross. A man-made circuit set mostly on a flat landscape and completely covered in wood chippings greeted the World Championship contenders. Despite being a relatively smooth circuit the majority of the riders found the Fairyhouse circuit to be quite difficult as the wood chippings shifted lap by lap and offered little in the way of consistent traction.

Despite the difficult conditions MacKenzie set the third fastest time during Saturday’s timed qualification session just 0.9 seconds behind pole setter Ken de Dycker meaning he’d have a great pick at the start gate for the following day’s points-paying races. Martin Honda’s Julien Bill and Marc de Reuver sat in 13th and 14th position at the end of the session separated by just 0.1 of a second.

Using his good gate pick and the awesome power of the factory CRF450 to his advantage MacKenzie launched his Honda into the lead at the start of moto one avoiding the first turn carnage that caught many of his rivals out. Unable to ride since a British championship race two weeks ago, because of the injuries he sustained in the Grand Prix of Czech Republic, MacKenzie understandably tightened up a little mid-race and slipped back to third in the running. Able to control third place quite easily MacKenzie was happy to pick up his first top-three moto result since round one of the series at Valkenswaard, in the Netherlands.

De Reuver had a much tougher time of it in race one at Fairyhouse than MacKenzie and after gating mid-pack could only improve to 13th position while his Martin Honda teammate Julien Bill got caught up in the first turn pile up and retired with an injured elbow.

MacKenzie once more fired his Honda to the holeshot in moto two and rode at a scorching pace for the first six laps setting the fastest lap of the race on his fifth tour of the Fairyhouse circuit. Then disaster struck in a tricky series of corners as MacKenzie made a small mistake but paid big! Crashing quite heavily the fall not only cost MacKenzie the lead the impact also caused the sweat in the Scotsman’s goggle foam to splash on to the inside of his goggle lens. Forced to ditch his goggles soon after, MacKenzie was forced to race for the remainder of the 35-minute plus two lap moto half-blind as the sawdust from the wood chip dumped on the circuit’s surface clogged his unprotected eyes. Dropping to third MacKenzie after his initial spill, Billy made a further mistake and finally finished fifth.

Julien Bill escaped the first turn carnage in moto two and powered away from the first turn in fifth position. Battling with and holding his own with the best riders in the world Julien hung on to a top-10 position despite riding in a lot of pain from his injured elbow. The second moto proved to be less kind to Julien’s Martin Honda team-mate Marc de Reuver as he retired from the race on the 13th lap while running outside of the championship points positions.

In the MX1 series standings MacKenzie still sits in ninth while De Reuver drops to 11th with Julien Bill moving ahead of Kornel Nemeth into 13th position with two rounds of the championship left to run. The FIM MX1 Motocross World Championship will continue next weekend in the deep and relentless sand of the Lierop circuit at the Grand Prix of Benelux in the penultimate round of the series.

“The track here is very different to the norm and a lot of the riders were frightened to see the wood chippings sat on top of it but it was the same for everyone and they just had to get on with racing it.

“Billy MacKenzie was excellent today and had good results. You could see his confidence grow in the first race and I thought he was going to carry that into the second race. In moto two he made a couple of small mistakes while leading and although they were nothing major they probably cost him the win.

“I really thought Marc de Reuver would have been able to perform well around here especially as his confidence was high after he rode well in America last week. It was quite disappointing that he struggled a bit in the first one and didn’t finish the second race. Of course we’ll probably see a completely different Marc in Lierop next week so I’m looking forward to that.

“Julien Bill got caught up in the first turn tangle in moto one and hurt his elbow quite badly so it was good to see him come out and ride so well in the second race.

“I’m really pleased with the way the bikes are performing – they’re getting out of the gate well, they’re performing well in the races and the reliability is good also. We’re all very pleased with the bike’s performance and I think everybody can see just how committed and serious we are with it.”

“The track was weird. I could see the method behind what they did but really they should have ripped the woodchip into the dirt beneath – if they’d have done that it would have been a perfect track but hopefully they’ll do it for next time. It was a bit difficult to ride because there were some hard parts and some soft parts – I don’t think it was the best track we’ve ever rode.

“Qualifying was fantastic for me considering that I haven’t ridden since the round at the Czech Republic except for braving out a couple of motos at Brampton. To get third was cool and it came quite easy as well so I was happy.

“In the first moto I wheelied coming out of the gate and didn’t get the best drive. Coming into the first corner I saw Barragan coming across the front of me and so I braked hard but nothing really happened on the woodchip. I kind of hit Barragan and he went down with a few others but I got out in the lead. I was feeling comfortable early on but I started to tighten up a bit mid-race but that’s understandable considering I haven’t been riding so much. I brought the bike home in third and I was pretty pumped with that because I felt like I’d be able to win the second moto – and the overall – because I knew I’d ride better in the second race.

“I got off to a great start in moto two but this time Barragan came right across the front of me to try and block me but it worked against him as when he hit me he sort of straightened himself up and he went straight on into the corner. That meant I got the holeshot again and I really concentrated hard on putting some fast laps in. I felt good and comfortable enough to keep pushing hard to try and cement the win.

“There was a tricky right left combo where the rut from the right hander went all the way to the next corner and as I started to straighten up and turn into the left-hander my wheel washed out in the rut and I went down. I banged my head pretty hard and all the sweat in the goggle lens splashed onto the inside of my goggles so I had to take them off. From there it was torture because the sawdust was really burning my eyes. After that I had another small crash. I know I’ve got the speed to win and now I’ve just got to keep it on two wheels and do it. It’s been a pretty positive weekend though after I spent the last three weeks recovering.”

“The track is terrible here – it’s a joke! I’ve never ridden on woodchips before in my whole life and so to come here to find this track was very disappointing. It would be understandable if this was one of the best tracks in the country but when you consider there are circuits like Ballykelly and Desertmartin here it’s an absolute joke that we had to come to this place – the only nice thing about it is the paddock.

“I didn’t feel good on the bike all weekend – the bike was perfect and the problem was with me. The first heat was okay but I had a problem with sweat inside my goggles and I eventually finished 13th which is not satisfactory for me. I have nothing to say about the second moto – I just wasn’t riding well and riding around in 23rd place is just not my style so I pulled in.”

“The track was very strange to ride and very slippery with not so many lines which made it difficult to pass – it was tricky for sure. The layout was nice though, just the surface was not so good. On Saturday I didn’t have such a good qualifying time but it still wasn’t so bad for the gate as it was quite fair here.

“In race one I had a very good start but I was hit in the first corner by Coppins and Pourcel and was almost knocked off the track. After Pourcel hit me I had a lot of pain in my elbow. It didn’t feel so bad for the first few laps but then it got worse and I couldn’t really control the handlebars, clutch and brake anymore. I pulled off and visited the medical center where they gave me some cream and ice to help control the swelling.

“I had a good start in the second moto and I was riding pretty well for the first 20 minutes. I was battling with the top guys and I was happy about that. In the last part of the moto I started to feel a little more pain and began to feel tired and so I had to slow down a little bit. Overall it was quite a good weekend – especially compared to Loket three weeks ago – and I can see that I still have good speed which is a positive thing.”
