The 4-stroke CRF450R machine made its debut at last in the 500cc class of the World Motocross Championship. Andrea Bartolini captured the hole shot ahead of the other over-500cc bikes alongside him, putting on a terrific performance to finish 4th. In the 250cc class, Beirer clinched 3rd and a spot on the podium, while teammate Joshua Coppins crossed the line in 5th place. All-Japan champion Yoshi Atsuta, who had appeared in every race, qualified in 15th position for the final. After reaching 10th place early in the race, he was trying to move further up the field when he landed badly and fell off. His leg was badly fractured after being hit by his machine's handlebar.
