Toni Bou and Takahisa Fujinami Finish on the Podium on Day 1 at Motegi

MOTEGI, Japan, April 26, 2014 - Repsol Honda rider Toni Bou took second position behind Adam Raga – Gas Gas on day one of the two day event. Takahisa Fujinami – Repsol Honda carried on the good form he started the season with after his win at the opening round in Australia to take a solid third position in front of large and enthusiastic home crowd. The event covered three laps of twelve sections but was delayed after the start by 75 minutes as a storm that never materialised threatened to spoil the competition.

Riding in some discomfort from his injuries sustained a training accident before the trip to Japan it was Bou who parted with a five mark penalty on one of the early hazards to put himself under pressure before he then fived section eight as his rival Adam Raga fived section ten where Bou went through feet up for a clean ride keeping the scores very close. On the difficult final section twelve all the leading riders parted with marks before rushing to finish in the time allowance where most of them incurred a single mark for exceeding it. After the opening lap it was still all to play for with Raga leading from Bou and his Repsol Honda team mate Fujinami who was still in close contention.

On the second lap both Bou and Raga were once again locked together in their own exciting fight for supremacy. Both riders parted with a single five mark penalty each in their overall lap scores but Raga further extended his advantage by a single mark. Fujinami was still working hard in front of the home crowd and his lap score of 12 kept him well on the pace of his two rivals.

On the final lap it was once again very close between the two leading riders with the win very much open for both of them but it was Bou who first lost the advantage with a five mark penalty on section nine followed by another on ten as Raga took just a single five on section ten. Bou fived the final section with Raga parting with just a single mark to take the win. Behind these two Fujinami was having a really good lap of his own but could not do enough to overhaul his team mate Bou for the runner up position who had put up a gallant fight suffering with the pain from his injuries. Despite not taking the win Bou still holds a four mark advantage over Raga as they wait for the second day’s competion in Japan. “It's been a tough day of competition but I am very happy to finish second as I am carrying the pain from my cracked rib and muscle injuries. On the final lap of the sections I was still fighting for the win but I knew victory had slipped from me when I incurred the five mark penalties towards the end of the closing lap. Tomorrow is another day and I will try to give the Repsol Honda team a win, thank you to the team for all the support today”

Trial Position 3rd, Championship Position 3rd
“This is my home race and it would be nice to give the Repsol Honda team a victory but on the opening lap I lost too many marks to challenge for the win. I rode very strong on the remaining laps with my sights on overtaking Toni but it was not to be. I am carrying very good form at the moment and I will try to push for the win tomorrow in front of my fans”
