Round 01 Gefrees – Germany

Bou Wins and Fujinami is Third

The Repsol Montesa HRC team dominated the podium at the opening round of the 2011 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship, as Toni Bou and Takahisa Fujinami on their factory Cota 4RT machines placed first and third respectively at the German Grand Prix. Albert Cabestany – Sherco was the runner up on the day, as he beat Fujinami by just one mark come the finish after the Japanese rider mounted a strong fight back on the second lap. Adam Raga – Gas Gas was fourth and Jeroni Fajardo – Ossa fifth, both finishing well clear of James Dabill – Beta in sixth.

Germany last hosted a GP in 2005, with Gefrees again being the setting six years later. The trial consisted of two main groups of sections. The first half of the lap featured steep climbs in a wooded area close to the paddock, whilst the remainder of sections, with the exception of the final man-made hazard, were located in a disused quarry a few kilometres away from the town. Overnight rain forced the organisers to make last minute changes to the sections, however still the course proved a tough test even for Bou and Fujinami on their four stroke powered machines.

Bou had a difficult task riding at the head of the field and had no one to watch in terms of line or grip, in hazards that lacked both on the first lap. After a slightly nervous start, Bou crashed heavily in section three and slightly injured his finger. However this was not enough to prevent the reigning champion from carving out a four-mark advantage over Cabestany following the initial tour of the fifteen greasy zones. Raga who began well and threatened to be Bou’s closest challenger was a further three marks back at the halfway point.

With the light rain that had punctuated the morning having disappeared from overhead, the second lap took place in drier conditions. These circumstances proved to be to Bou's liking as he extended his lead at the top of the standings and ran out a comfortable winner to open his 2011 title defence. All the top riders produced better second lap performances. None more so than Fujinami, who dropped a mere eight marks on his final tour to come within touching distance of second place, to salvage what was looking likely to be a disappointing day for the ex World champion.

Finally the opening GP proved to be a successful occasion for the Repsol Montesa HRC duo, with Bou and Fujinami occupying two out of the three podium places on their factory Cota 4RT’s that worked perfectly in the slippery sections.

Toni Bou (Repsol Montesa):
Trial result: 1st Championship position: 1st

“It was tough riding first today, as there were no lines to see in the sections. I did not start well and then made a big crash in section three, luckily the bike was not damaged and I only hurt my finger a little. From section four I began to ride well and on the second lap I rode even better. I am happy to win today, as the first victory of the season is always an important one.”

Takahisa Fujinami (Repsol Montesa)
Trial result: 3rd Championship position: 3rd

“Finally I can be happy as I arrived in third place and on the podium, but this morning I thought it was going to be a bad day. I made a very bad first lap and could not get to grip with the sections. I am very happy with my riding on the second lap as I made the best lap of the trial, This helped me recover a lot of positions, but I am also a little disappointed that I did not take second as I was very close to Cabestany in the end. Being on the podium at the first GP is a good result.”

Laia Sanz (Repsol Montesa)
Trial result: 12th Championship position: 12th

“My first lap was a big disaster, and my riding was terrible. Thankfully the conditions were better on the second lap and so was my riding. My second lap score was eighteen marks less than my first so I think that can tell you a lot about my day. Hopefully in France next week I can do two good laps.”
