Safety for Everyone
Intelligent technologies at the service of safety
Honda aims to realize safety for everyone, not only those inside the vehicle but those outside as well, including pedestrians.
Our efforts encompass all levels of active and passive safety, and we are developing technologies that support safer driving and reduce the risk of injury in a collision.
For the future, Honda will continue to pursue ever-higher levels of safety for everyone in our mobile society through our innovative research and the development of intelligent technologies.
Active Safety
Accident Prevention Technologies
Intelligent Night Vision System
The Intelligent Night Vision System alerts the driver to the presence of pedestrians in the vehicle’s path at night, when they can be difficult to see. The system uses far infrared cameras to detect pedestrians in or approaching the vehicle's path, and provides warnings to the driver via a visual enhancement frame around the pedestrian’s on-screen image and an audio caution. Honda is the first company in the world to develop a night vision system that not only notifies the driver when a pedestrian is present in the vehicle’s path, but also provides visual and audio warnings.

HiDS (Honda Intelligent Driver Support)
HiDS reduces driver burden and fatigue when driving on freeways with LKAS (Lane Keeping Assist System) and IHCC (Intelligent Highway Cruise Control).
AFS (Adaptive Front Lighting System)
AFS controls lateral movement of the headlights in response to steering inputs, illuminating the direction of travel when turning.
VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist)
The system controls side-slip to help maintain vehicle stability on slippery road surfaces.
Pre-Crash Safety
Accident Prediction Technologies
CMS (Collision Mitigation Brake System) +E-pretensioners
The system uses millimeter-wave radar to predict collisions and provides brake assist as well as retraction of seatbelts prompting the driver to take action to avoid an accident and helping to mitigate occupant injuries and vehicle damage in the event of an accident.
Close to vehicle ahead
If the car ahead is too close (and the system calculates that there is a risk of collision), the driver is prompted to take preventative action with audio and visual warnings.
Closer to vehicle ahead
If the distance between the two vehicles further diminishes, the system applies light braking and provides a tactile warning by gently retracting the driver’s seatbelt.
Collision imminent
If an accident appears to be unavoidable, the system applies strong braking and firmly retracts both driver’s and passenger’s seatbelts to help reduce impact on occupants and vehicle damage.
Passive Safety
Injury Reduction Technologies
Crash Compatibility Body
Improves occupant protection and compatibility with other vehicles.

Pedestrian Injury-Reduction Body
Uses impact-absorbing structures for the hood, bumpers and other parts to help reduce head and leg injuries in the event of collision involving a pedestrian.

Real World Safety Research
Indoor Omnidirectional Real World Crash Test Facility
Honda established the world’s first omni-directional car-to-car crash test facility to advance safety research into real-world accidents.
2nd Generation Pedestrian Dummy
Honda’s 2nd generation pedestrian dummy enables measurement of injuries in collisions involving a pedestrian, and contributing to the development of Honda’s Pedestrian Injury-reduction Body.
Promoting Safe Driving
Towards Safer Mobility
In addition to our work in developing safer vehicles, Honda maintains a strong focus on people, working to promote safe driving and riding. Honda dealer sales representatives are trained to instruct customers in the safe operation of their vehicles. We also conduct hands-on training at our traffic safety centers, allowing trainees to experience a range of dangerous driving situations in safety. In the interest of continuing education, Honda is also developing safety education programs that accommodate all age groups, including everyone from the very young to senior citizens. With our sights set on realizing a mobile society in which traffic accidents are minimized, we will continue to extend the range of our safety activities.
