In response to environmental needs, Honda has been leading the way to the development of cleaner engine emission technology. Honda's Low Emission Vehicle (LEV), introduced in 1995, was followed by an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) that meets California ULEV regulations. With the goal of virtually eliminating harmful emissions in gasoline engines, which remain the dominant type of car engine, Honda combined and refined its accumulated technology to develop ZLEV, which lowers total emissions to 10% that of ULEV total emissions per kilometer in ZLEV equals the total emissions produced by an electric power plant while generating enough power to drive a zero-emission electric vehicle one kilometer. NMOG (nonmethane organic gas) [HC] emissions in ZLEV are nearly eliminated. In fact, in busy city traffic, ZLEV emissions contain less HC than the surrounding air.
