Following
resounding success in the Brazilian motorcycle market,
Honda is increasingly at home in South America.
Motorcycle
Production Reaches 5 Million Units
Honda’s engagement in South America began with the
import of motorcycles in the 1960s. The next milestone
was the launch of motorcycle production in Brazil in 1977.
Honda has since secured some 90% of Brazil’s domestic
motorcycle market, and cumulative production now exceeds
5 million units. In 1984, Honda began exporting its Brazilian-made
motorcycles throughout Latin America, to the US, Europe
and many other countries. Meanwhile, we’ve been
proactive in expanding production and sale of power products
that meet local needs.
Fit Production Growing in South America
During the 1990s, Honda expanded its South American operations
to include automobiles as well as motorcycles. The import
of Honda automobiles to Brazil began in 1992. Four years
later, in 1996, we established the local automobile production
subsidiary Honda Automoveis do Brazil Ltda., and in 1997
began research activities in Brazil, the same year local
Civic production started.
In April 2000, Honda South America was established to
manage expansion in the South American market. In April
2003, Honda launched local production and sales of a second
model, the Fit, significantly increasing capacity in Brazil.
Honda plans to export the Fit to Argentina, Chile, Peru
and other South American countries and, seizing the opportunity
provided by our entry into the region’s small-car
market, also plans to expand operations in South America.
We’re also working to meet and exceed customer expectations
in the production and sale of power products throughout
the region. |
