Fabrizio 13th and Haslam Out on a Day of Red Flags and Delays

The first FIM Superbike World Championship race of the Laguna Seca weekend took place on Saturday, rather than the more usual Sunday. It was an unlucky day for Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) as he fell during the second of three attempts to complete the scheduled 26-lap race and was not able to make the final restart.

Eventually the third start delivered a checkered flag for the SBK riders after what was a shortened 12 lap sprint in which Michel Fabrizio (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) battled hard to finish 13th. Track temperatures had risen as the eventual restart of the race was delayed until 3.30pm, after the first start at 2pm, making the job of finding an ideal set-up a tough one.

Michel had been involved in a midfield battle but found it tough to compete with his fellow riders as he experienced some of the same front-end grip issues as Haslam. He had to settle for a points score outside the top ten as he, like Leon, now looks for improvements for the second race of the weekend on Sunday.

Full points were awarded despite the short 12-lap race duration with the race being won by Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) from Chaz Davies (BMW) and Eugene Laverty (Aprilia).

Superpole qualifying had taken place shortly before the start of the first race, with Haslam 12th on the grid in what was his first race at Laguna since 2004. Fabrizio was 13th and therefore starting from the fifth row of the grid, which made the start of his raceday challenge a tough one.

The second race of the weekend will take place at 2pm local time in California, on Sunday 29th September.

“We had a little bit of an electrical problem in the first race and I was actually quite grateful it got stopped as we came in and the guys in the team fixed it. I had a front grip problem and I was losing the front on almost every other corner. Where I went down I do not know if I hit oil or not – another rider who fell there thought he hit oil – but I was struggling anyway. It had not been a problem all weekend and we were well into the race, so I do not think it was anything to do with it being the first right hander after so many lefts. I hurt my injured leg a bit but I did not break it again, it is just sore.”

“It’s been a very strange day because this morning in free practice and in Superpole I was very happy and I had a really good feeling with the bike. My starting position was not good but I was looking forward to the race. I don’t know what happened because we didn’t change anything for the race. The track temperature was maybe a little higher but I had very big problems with grip at the front. We are looking through the data now to see if we can find the problem, but I hope it will be better tomorrow.”
