The Aircraft Engine R&D Center founded in July, 2004 develops the world's best aircraft engines, bringing Honda into a leading position.

Our research on compact gas turbine engines for aircraft at the Fundamental Technology Research Center focuses on innovative technology and Honda creativity to generate superior products and expand global business opportunities.

Small turbofan engine development

1986: Founded Wako Fundamental Technology Research Center and initiated
small gas turbine engine research.

1999: Embarked on designing the HF118 Turbofan Engine as a compact, lightweight,
fuel-efficient and low-emission jet engine.

Jun 2002: Commenced high-altitude flight testing.

December 2003: Had the first successful fullscale flight test in North Carolina, USA.

October 2004: Established a joint venture company with General Electric Co., (GE), the world’s largest jet engine manufacturer to develop Honda’s first commercial engine, the HF120 in partnership with GE.

The HF120, a more sophisticated version of the HF118 incorporates Honda proprietary computational fluid dynamics software to optimize airflow within the compact engine, applying composite material and heat resistant super alloy, and is top-class for light weight, low fuel efficiency, low emission and long durability.

December 2013: FAA Type Certificate issued for the HF120.
