Automobile R&D Center (Wako): Keeping in step with changing times in the creation of automobiles built around people's feelings

Honda Automobile R&D Center Wako is the home of all departments related to automotive styling. This is where we research social trends, changing times, lifestyles, and a wide range of other factors that affect our customers' feelings about their automobiles; where all our stylists put themselves in the customer's place as they seek to create an ideal automotive image and use every ounce of creativity and ingenuity in researching and designing the kind of automotive styling that has earned Honda a reputation for excellence in distinctive automotive styling. The interior and exterior styling created at Wako is then used by the engineers at Automobile R&D Center Tochigi to design the automotive products that go on the market.

Design Studios

The styling studios are divided into groups according to areas of expertise, and each group works together to develop styling for specific models.
The design of a car's basic structure is coordinated by a package layout styling group. Also, the exterior and interior styling groups create styling concepts and concrete styling proposals while cooperating closely with the package layout group. Also part of those groups is a model group, which is responsible for creating scale models of exterior styling proposals from clay and other materials. In addition, the color styling and textile group is responsible for exterior and interior color schemes as well as interior fabrics and trim materials, which are planned with the help of the 3D computer simulation group, after which a full-scale mockup is fabricated and the styling is finalized.
The finished styling is then converted into highprecision data by the data group and sent to the engineering design and test departments at Automobile R&D Tochigi, where it is used in the development of the production vehicle.
