Automobile R&D Center (Wako): Reinventing the Automobile : An Evolution in Car Comfort

The design-related aspects of car development operations have been centralized at the Automobile R&D Center (Wako). At this center, human perceptions and feelings are studied from various perspectives, including the social environment, historical change and lifestyles. Our designers put themselves in the position of customers as they search for the automotive forms and styling that will meet the needs of today. Their task is to apply new ideas to the evolution of car designs with that unique Honda quality. New car designs developed here then undergo comprehensive development at the Automobile R&D Center (Tochigi) before they evolve into finished Honda products: cars for sale in markets throughout the world.

The design studio has categorized staff groups by each role, each group is united for a vehicle model of a development Work begins with the Layout Design Group, which plays the lead role in designing the basic framework for each vehicle.
The Interior/Exterior Group, in constant discussion with the Layout Design Group, develops the concept for the vehicle along with the tangible form it ultimately takes. The Interior/Exterior Group includes the Modeling Group, which builds clay models and other mockups of vehicle designs. To flesh out the details of the vehicle, the Color and Textile Group determines the interior and exterior color schemes and interior fabric selections, while the 3D Simulation Group uses computer modeling to simulate the look of the model. With input from all of these groups, the completed design of each vehicle is finalized in the form of a mockup model. The Data Group then converts this finished design into highly precise computer data, which is sent to the Automobile Center Tochigi 's design and testing sectors for transfer to mass production.
