Serving Honda’s largest market, our North American operations play a key role in all aspects of automobile operations, from development and production to export.
Manufacturing Products Where the Demand Is
Established in 1959 as a local motorcycle sales subsidiary, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. was Honda’s first locally incorporated overseas venture. In 1978, Honda established Honda of America Mfg., Inc. as a local motorcycle production unit, and in 1982 became the first Japanese manufacturer to produce automobiles in North America. Lawn mower production began in 1984. In 1986, Honda also began operations at an automobile plant in Canada, acting on the corporate philosophy of manufacturing products where the demand is. The North American operations play a critical role in Honda’s global supply network, having exported over 700,000 vehicles since 1987.
50 million sales in North America
As of September 2003, cumulative automobile sales in North America reached 20 million units, and overall sales including motorcycles and power products surpassed 50 million units. This new milestone is further evidence that customers in North America appreciate Honda’s world-class engineering, technological leadership and product innovation. Honda now has the capacity to build more than 1.22 million vehicles annually in North America and sources more than 75 percent of its US products from plants in North America. New capacity in Alabama and in Canada will soon push annual production to 1.4 million units. We now employ more than 26,000 associates in North America in R&D, manufacturing and sales. Honda currently has 11 manufacturing plants in North America producing automobiles, light trucks, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, personal watercraft, automobile and motorcycle engines, automobile transmissions, and power products, including lawn mowers and power product engines. |
