MotoGP 2013 Track Report HRC Team Principal Livio Suppo

Round 9Marc Sets New Record Again in U.S.

The Repsol Honda Team rewrote history again in Laguna Seca, with Marc Marquez becoming the first rookie to win there and the youngest rider winning back-to-back races in the premier class. What else can be said about Marc?

Another great weekend for Marc and an unbelievable result winning here as a rookie. In the last months we considered bringing him here before the race with a road bike to “learn” at least the layout of the circuit, but then it was not possible due to our calendar, and the track's schedule. Now we can say that anyway Marc didn’t need it!

Marc has been again the main protagonist of the race with his pass on Valentino Rossi in the famous corkscrew. Did you expect to see a similar move in the same place after the one with Stoner and Rossi in 2008?

That corner is very tricky, and with Marc and Vale involved… you never know! It is one of those passes that people will speak about for a while as the one in 2008 for sure!

Marquez is now leading the championship standings 16 points ahead of Pedrosa and 26 of Lorenzo. Not only the gap, but also the way he’s been performing in this first stage of the season surely makes him favorite for the title?

Honestly I think it’s too early to speak about it. Dani and Jorge had both lost many points in the last races due to injuries, but now there is the break and they’ll be back very strong in Indy. The Championship is still long, but I believe that Marc, Dani and Jorge will fight for the title until the end!

Pedrosa also took very important points for the championship with his 5th place finish in a very complicated weekend. How important was it for him to reserve energy during the practice sessions to be able to be competitive in the race and finish in front of Lorenzo?

Dani has done a great race. It has been a very difficult weekend for him. His shoulder was very painful and he didn’t take part in FP1 or FP3 to minimize the risk and save energy for the race. It means anyway, he had less time on track to prepare the bike, but his team did a great job and Dani has been able to do a superb race, finishing in front of Jorge and taking important points. So definitely a great weekend for him too!

Stefan Bradl took pole position, with Marquez and Bautista completing a first row for Honda, and Honda also achieved their seventh successive win in the USA. How do you explain this incredible record in America?

It is unbelievable! Looks like our bikes work even better in the USA! Seriously, it is difficult to say, but we are so happy, as USA is a great market for Honda and we are proud to win here! On top of the 7th victory in a row, in Laguna we had a great result with Stefan’s first podium and also a good race for Alvaro in 4th very close to the podium too. All four Honda’s on track finished the race in top 5!

HRC just announced that Stoner will do a few tests on the RCV in Motegi. Can you tell us more about this? Does it mean Casey will do a wild card this year?

This was something we were thinking about since Casey retired. He always told us that he was happy to stop racing but for sure he will miss riding his bike, so we asked him to do some tests, as it’s not every day you have the opportunity to have a fast rider like Casey available for tests! He will enjoy riding a prototype and HRC will be able to do some interesting tests, both with the full prototype RCV and with the “Production Racer” bike we will sell to the MotoGP teams next year. Anyway, Casey won’t do any wild card race, just private tests in Motegi.
