Rossi Takes His Sixth Consecutive MotoGP Win of the Season.

In a day of record-setting events, reigning 500cc World Champion Valentino Rossi (REPSOL Honda) raced to his seventh MotoGP victory of the season, his sixth in a row - a record even for the multi-talented Italian. It was Rossi's 46th GP victory, the race number he has used throughout his precocious career. Just for good measure he established new lap and race records for the circuit. Max Biaggi (Marlboro Yamaha) finished second in the race, with Alex Barros fourth for West Honda Pons.

It was also a 'red letter day' for Rossi's chief mechanic and crew chief, Jeremy Burgess. Australian Burgess has now prepared 100 race-winning 250cc, 500cc and MotoGP machines in his exemplary 20-year grand prix career. And it happened on Rossi's 100th grand prix appearance.

Rossi now holds a 77-point lead in the championship over teammate Tohru Ukawa, who did not race at Donington Park following a high speed crash on the first day of practice. Although he broke no bones in the crash, Ukawa was so badly knocked-about he could hardly walk.

Marco Melandri (MS Aprilia) stretched his 250cc GP winning streak to four with a last gasp victory over championship rival Fonsi Nieto (Telefonica MoviStar Repsol Aprilia). Nieto's young teammate Toni Elias overcame a dreadful start to claim the final podium place, passing Franco Battaini (Imola Circuit Aprilia) two corners from home. Roberto Rolfo finished fifth for Team Fortuna Honda Gresini. Melandri's win extends his series lead to 13 points over Nieto. Rolfo holds third place, a further 25 points adrift.

Fittingly, on Bastille Day, the 125cc laurels went to Frenchman Arnaud Vincent (Imola Circuit Aprilia). Vincent overcame a poor start to work his way through the field to join the hard charging leading trio of Daniel Pedrosa (Telefonica Movistar Junior Team), 125cc World Champion Manuel Poggiali, and Lucio Cecchinello. Vincent took the lead with four laps remaining in the race, then held off Pedrosa to win. Poggiali finished third and maintained his series lead.
