11th Win of Season for Rossi in Final Rio Grand Prix!
Katoh Reaches 11 Wins Too in 250cc!

The weather was unstable throughout the day for Round 16, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 500cc event was interrupted by rain and turned into a two-part race, but Valentino Rossi put in a scintillating display in both parts to win for the 11th time this year. Pole leader Tohru Ukawa got off to a fine start in the first race, which was declared dry, but then the rain began to fall as he was leading on lap 5 and the race was stopped. In the second race, Rossi controlled the battle with Carlos Checa (Yamaha) and Max Biaggi (Yamaha) to take the honors in this season finale. Brazilian Alex Barros finished 4th in front of a home crowd. The 250cc race, meanwhile, was held in difficult, partly wet conditions. Daijiro Katoh met stiff resistance throughout from Aprilia riders, but took the lead in the closing stages to clinch his 11th victory of the season, setting a new record number of season wins in this class. His victory also secured the constructors title for Honda, completing a clean sweep for the constructor in all three classes this year.
