Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Round 15 Malaysia GP (Sepang)Katoh claims 250cc title with 10th win this season! |
|
The Malaysian Grand Prix, the 15th round of the Championship Series, was held in
Sepang in sweltering temperatures of up to 37ºC. Daijiro Katoh claimed his
tenth win of the season to become the title holder in the 250cc class, making
him the second Japanese champion in this category after Tetsuya Harada in 1993.
His win also puts him in the record books in a tie for the greatest number of
wins in a series throughout the whole history of the Grand Prix. Katoh will be
aiming to beat that record in the final forthcoming round in Brazil. After
finishing second in the heats, Rossi clinched his 10th victory in the 500cc
class this season, maintaining the momentum that gave him the championship at
the previous round in Australia. During the middle of the race there was a
leading group of 5 drivers, but Rossi raised his pace suddenly towards the end
and seemed to sail comfortably to top position. It was a performance worthy of
a new champion. The 125cc class was won by Yoichi Ui (L & M Derbi Team). Toni
Elias, who had come into the race fighting for the championship, dropped from
the contest, finishing 6th. He will fight to retain 2nd place overall at the
Brazilian Grand Prix
