Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Round 14 Australian GP (Phillip Island)

Rossi Crowned World Champion with 9th Win of Season!
Katoh Moves Closer to 250cc Title!

Phillip Island was the venue for Round 14 of the season, the Australian Grand Prix, where all eyes were on Valentino Rossi in his attempt to clinch the 500cc championship. In the end, the Italian shrugged off the intense pressure to win the race and take the title. It was an extremely tough race, the leading group increasing from five drivers in the middle of the race to nine drivers near the end, but Rossi never seemed to lose his focus and was first to take the checkered flag. Loris Capirossi finished in 3rd, Alex Barros in 4th, and Tohru Ukawa in 5th to give Honda a terrific 4 out of the top 5 places. The result hands both the individual and the constructors 500cc championships to Honda. In the 250cc event, Daijiro Katoh, 3rd in qualifying, got off to a great start and took the lead on lap 4, holding on to win the 25-lap race. His 9th victory of the season takes him a further step towards the title. Meanwhile, a 3rd place finish in the 125cc race keeps the championship hopes of Toni Elias very much alive.
