The German Grand Prix
held at Sachsenring, Round 9 of the World Championships, drew a crowd of more
than 170,000 over the 3-day event. M. Biaggi (Y) won the 500cc class, while Barros
and Rossi also put up a good fight and finished in at 5th and 7th, respectively.
It was not a happy race for Rossi, who had previously won a position on every
winners' rostrum this season except for the Italian GP where he was forced to
retire after a fall, although he does still keep the top ranking position. In
the 250cc class, D. Kato, T. Harada (A) and M. Melandri are fighting for the title.
Although in the lead going into the final lap, Kato had to be content with second
place after being overtaken by Melandri. This was another step towards victory
for Kato in the championship, however, as he increased his lead to 44 points over
Harada (A), who finished 3rd in the race. In the 125cc class, S. Sanna was the
winner. Elias kept his position on the winners' rostrum for the fourth time in
a row by finishing in 2nd place, which reduces the gap between him and the leader
to just 3 points. He can be expected to catch up during the second half of the
championship.
