Kanaan’s pole is the final one for the current Honda V8/Dallara chassis. He also recorded the first pole for the package, at the 2003 season-opening event at Phoenix International Raceway. IndyCar will introduce a new Dallara chassis, powered by turbocharged V6 engines from Honda, Chevrolet and Lotus, in 2012. Two-time defending series champion Dario Franchitti, and Will Power, his only remaining title rival, posted disappointing qualifying runs. Power will be starting 17th, with Franchitti alongside, 18th.

Reigning Indianapolis 500 Champion Dan Wheldon will start 34th and last as part of the event’s “$5 million challenge”. A win by Wheldon would earn the driver and a lucky fan $2.5 million each. Television coverage for Sunday’s 200-lap event will start at 3:30 p.m. on ABC.
