Sato Makes History With Iowa Pole

Race Results >>

Takuma Sato made IZOD IndyCar Series history Friday, becoming the first Japanese driver to record an IndyCar pole in qualifying for Saturday’s Iowa Corn Indy 250. Sato edged Danica Patrick – who will start on the outside of the front row in second – by just over one-tenth of a mile per hour in single-car qualifying this afternoon around the .89-mile long Iowa Speedway oval, the shortest track on the 2011 calendar.

Sato’s KV Racing Technology teammate and defending race winner, Tony Kanaan, will start third, followed by the rookie star of this year’s Indianapolis 500, JR Hildebrand, in fourth. Championship contenders Will Power and Dario Franchitti will start fifth and sixth, respectively, after Power edged his rival by just .0001 in cumulative time over their two-lap qualifying runs.

Still feeling the effects of a heavy crash last Saturday at The Milwaukee Mile, Simona de Silvestro was not medically cleared to drive this weekend; her HVM Racing team has withdrawn from the event. Live television coverage for Saturday night’s 250-lap contest will be on VERSUS, beginning at 8 p.m. EDT.

Takuma Sato (#5 KV Racing Technology Honda) pole qualifier, 1st career IndyCar pole:
“It’s a great feeling [to qualify on the pole]. I think, as a team, we have a very strong package here. The engineers and mechanics all did a great job and I was very comfortable in the car, so here we are! I really enjoy short ovals. They’re very competitive with fantastic, close racing. I think the fans are in for an exciting race tomorrow night.”
