Briscoe Claims Chicagoland Pole Race Results >>

Returning to the scene of his spectacular, season-ending crash in 2005, Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe qualified on the pole Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway for Sunday’s IndyCar Series championshipconcluding Peak Antifreeze Indy 300.

Series points leader Scott Dixon will start alongside Briscoe, in second, and needs only to finish eighth or better to clinch his second IndyCar Series title [his first came in 2003]. Helio Castroneves, Dixon’s sole remaining title challenger, had his fourth-fastest run disallowed for running below the white line that separates the racing surface from the track apron. As a result, he will start 28th and last in the field.

Sunday’s 200-lap race, the 18th and final championship event of 2008, starts at 2:30 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on ABC.

Ryan Briscoe (#6 Team Penske Honda) pole qualifier, 3rd pole of 2008; 4th career pole; 1st oval track pole:
“I think it’s nice to be the last car [to qualify]. You know what the goal is. I knew we had a fast car, quick enough for the pole. So when I saw the first lap [speed] was fastest, then it just became a case of keeping it up to the finish. We want to do the same thing tomorrow. Keep up front, keep [Scott] Dixon behind us and see how the race develops.”
