Rain showers washed out qualifying Saturday at Iowa Speedway, handing the pole for Sunday’s Iowa Corn 250 to 2008 IndyCar Series points leader Scott Dixon.
Rain arrived in central Iowa after only two drivers – Ryan Briscoe and Dan Wheldon – had completed qualifying attempts. As a result, the starting lineup was set according to team entrant point standings.
Helio Castroneves will start second, followed by Wheldon and Tony Kanaan.
Sunday’s 250-lap event starts at 1:30 p.m. EDT with live television coverage on ABC. Two drivers in the 26-car field will not start on Sunday, as the cars of both team owner/driver Marty Roth and Dale Coyne Racing’s Bruno Junqueira were withdrawn after separate crashes during practice Saturday morning.
Neither driver was injured, but both cars were damaged beyond immediate repair.
Scott Dixon (#9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) pole starter, based on championship points standings, 13th career IndyCar pole:
“You never want to sit on the pole like this. Everybody wants a proper qualifying. It’s actually been a tough day for us. We didn’t really have the speed [for pole] in practice, so with the rain we’re actually starting better than we ought to be. But in a way, it is a reward for all the work the team has done leading up to this weekend.”
