Rain Prevents Indy Second-Day Qualifying

Race Results >>

Continuing rain showers Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway forced the cancellation of second- day qualifying for the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500. It’s the second time in the last three years that rain has interrupted qualifying at Indianapolis, as the entire first weekend of qualifying attempts was washed out in 2006.

Yesterday, Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon claimed his first Indianapolis 500 pole, and third pole of the 2008 IndyCar Season, with a four-lap average speed of 223.366 mph. His teammate and 2005 Indy winner Dan Wheldon will start second, with Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe starting on the outside of the front row in third.

Practice at the Speedway will resume on Wednesday, May 14, and run through Friday. Saturday, May 17 and Sunday will be the final two days of qualifying to set the 33-car starting field, with 11 more grid positions and “bumping” from the field expected to take place each day.

Erik Berkman(President Honda Performance Development) on first weekend qualifying at Indianapolis:
“It’s a shame the weather conspired against us today, as I was expecting another exciting day of qualifying. ‘Pole Day’ certainly had plenty of activity for the fans, with 32 qualifying attempts for the first 11 grid positions. Congratulations to Scott Dixon and the entire Target/Chip Ganassi organization on their 1-2 qualifying performance, and to all our associates at HPD and technical partner Ilmor for their excellent efforts in supplying the entire field with Honda Indy V-8 engines.”
