Kanaan Claims Kentucky Pole Race Results >>

Michigan International Speedway race winner Tony Kanaan continues to have momentum in the IndyCar Series, as last Sunday’s race winner qualified on the pole Friday for the Meijer Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway. Kanaan is the eighth different pole qualifier in as many IndyCar races at the 1.5-mile oval track, and will be seeking his first victory here in Saturday’s 200-lap race. His best previous finish in Kentucky is fifth.

Kanaan’s Andretti Green Racing teammate, IndyCar Series championship points leader Dario Franchitti, qualified on the outside of the front row in second. It is his eighth-consecutive top five qualifying performance. Scott Sharp will start third, as his Rahal Letterman Racing team continues to show strong form on the 1.5-mile tracks. Franchitti’s closest championship rival, Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, starts from the outside of the second row in fourth, with teammate Dan Wheldon fifth.

Also of note, series rookie Ryan Hunter-Reay will start eighth in his Rahal Letterman Racing Honda, his strongest qualifying run since joining the series earlier this month at Mid-Ohio. Vision Racing had its best combined qualifying effort of the season with all three drivers in the top-10, led by sixth-fastest Tomas Scheckter and followed by Ed Carpenter, ninth, and 10th-starting A.J. Foyt IV.

Saturday night’s 300-mile race, the final night race of the 2007 season, starts at 6:30 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on ESPN2.

Tony Kanaan (#11 Andretti Green Racing Honda) pole qualifier, second pole of 2007 and 8th career IndyCar pole:
“I knew we had a good car, we unloaded fast and just got quicker as the day went on. But I wasn’t expecting [to qualify] that quick! I could tell it was a good lap, probably a 217 [mile per hour average], but I was surprised when ‘218’ came up on the dash. [On his championship hopes] The only thing I can do is try to win as many races as possible the rest of the year, and let the chips fall where they may. Other than that, I want to help my teammate [championship leader Dario Franchitti] as much as possible. I’ll be a good ‘wingman’ for him, just as he has helped me in the past.”
