Rain and persistent cold temperatures forced Indy Racing League officials to postpone Pole Day qualifying activities Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It was the second consecutive weather-abbreviated day at Indianapolis, as a massive weather system has stalled over the Great Lakes, bringing showers and unseasonably cool temperatures throughout most of Indiana since early Thursday evening.

Weather permitting, qualifying now will start Sunday at noon EDT, with the coveted pole position and first 22 starting positions in the 33-car starting field – the first Indy 500 with Honda as the sole engine supplier – up for grabs. In the qualifying draw held Friday afternoon, rookie Townsend Bell drew the first position of the 27 drivers who have practiced this week, giving him the opportunity to make the first qualifying run when weather conditions allow.

Sam Hornish Jr. and defending race winner Dan Wheldon led the field in practice this week, both turning laps in excess of 226 mph.
