In March 1999, Honda started collaborating with the University of California, Riverside (UCR) on an experimental multi-port ICVS system called the UCR IntelliShare. This trial scheme featured three ports within the UCR campus, supplied with 25 Honda EV-Plus electric vehicles were shared among a membership of over 300 university staff, faculty and students on a pay-per-use basis.
Members of the scheme could rent and return vehicles at any of the three ports. If there was disproportionate number of vehicles at any given port, the vehicles have been designed so that a staff riding a scooter could move two of them at a time to another port in order to balance the distribution.
With an average usage of 100 trips per day (six or seven trips per day per vehicle), the UCR IntelliShare project was considered highly successful in terms of usage rates.
