In the championship race of the US Grand Prix, Jarno Trulli of Benson & Hedges Jordan Honda took the checkered flag in 4th. Until this point, Jarno has shown outstanding speed in the qualifiers, while being plagued by mechanical difficulties in the races. This time around, however, Trulli had a trouble-free race, crossing the finish line 4th. But at the vehicle inspection, the FIA ruled that Jarno's vehicle was in violation of the rules, and Jarno was eliminated from the race results. The Jordan Honda team immediately appealed the ruling.
The ruling placed teammate Jean Alesi in 6th. Olivier Panis of Lucky Strike BAR Honda took 10th. Jacques Villeneuve retired during the 46th lap.
The race was won by McLaren's Mika Hakkinen, his second win of the season following his success in the British Grand Prix.
