7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) with internal high-output motor

The seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) fundamentally automates gear changes by using two clutches while retaining the structure, low power loss and strong acceleration of a conventional manual transmission. The DCT clutch is combined with a motor positioned at the end of the transmission, controlling the connection between the engine and motor. By clever gear arrangement, Honda has created a 7 speed DCT in a surprisingly short package.

Basic Structure and Operation

Gear shifts are performed by alternate use of two clutches: one for the odd- and one for the even-numbered gears. By readying the next gear to be connected, gear changes are immediate. The simple inter-gear structure minimizes power loss, increases fuel efficiency, and realizes a sharp response and direct acceleration feel.

With the SPORT HYBRID-iDCD, the odd and even axes are positioned in parallel, with a planetary first gear reducing the unit's length. The high-output motor is so small, it fits inside the transmission case.

Honda has managed to create an extremely compact DCT unit by designing the first gear as a planetary gear, thus decreasing its size in relation to the constant mesh gears to the extent that it can be housed within the center space of the motor.

The motor is connected to the odd-numbered gears, providing torque and electricity regeneration through gears 1, 3, 5, and 7.
