What is a fuel cell vehicle? The fuel cell vehicle in operationHow the fuel cell works

The innovative power plant of the FCX Clarity ensures efficient performance in all driving conditions. In addition to the fuel cell stack that serves as the primary power source, the vehicle is equipped with a lithium ion battery to store the electricity generated by the fuel cell. During startup and acceleration-when a large amount of power is required-the electricity from the fuel cell stack to the drive motor is supplemented with electricity from the lithium ion battery, enhancing the vehicle's powerful performance. During deceleration, the drive motor works as a generator, converting kinetic energy into electricity, which is stored in the lithium ion battery. When the vehicle is stationary, an idle stop system shuts down electrical generation in the fuel cell stack. Electricity from the lithium ion battery maintains operation of the air conditioner and other devices. The system optimally manages electrical power for highly efficient operation.
