Paulo “Speedy” Goncalves is a race veteran with a long-standing off-road background. The Portuguese family man has been a fixture in the rally raid scene since 2006. Known to be a real team player, Goncalves has a very good relationship with everyone he works with and is highly regarded for his positive and cheerful manner.
On the bike, he boasts impressive speed, ability and experience.
The 34-year-old has been shining at the Rally Dakar for the first time in 2009. Two years later he won his first stage, backing it up with several podium results in 2012. Just when he had set his sights firmly on the top three overall, a controversial six-hour penalty in the second week saw him drop back, dashing any hopes of a top finish. Recently in 2013, after having to overcome all those omnipresent challenges that are making the 14-day marathon the most demanding race in the world, Goncalves finished the Dakar in 10th place overall.
Lately Goncalves made two bold statements at the opening double header of the 2013 FIM Cross Country Rally World Championship. The friendly Iberian clinched runner-up finishes both in Abu Dhabi and Qatar, missing the victory twice by only a few seconds. These results have boosted Goncalves' confidence. Currently lying second in the world standings, and soon aboard a new bike, he is eager to keep his name in the headlines.
