Franchitti Fifth in Season Closer |
The 73-lap finale of the 2002 CART season, held at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit
in Mexico City, got underway at 3:08pm, and on the opening lap Tony Kanaan stormed into
the lead from fourth position at the start. After clocking the most lead laps and pitting for a
second time on lap 40, Kanaan dramatically lost his grip on the race when his fuel caught
fire as he tried to reenter the course. It was Dario Franchitti who now found himself in first
position, but a slow pit stop during a full-course caution on lap 52 lost him a lot of valuable
time. In the end, despite Honda drivers leading for two-thirds of the entire race, the best
result they could achieve was Franchitti's fifth-place finish.
