Andretti on Podium in Second, Pole-sitter Kanaan Clinches Fourth |
The California Speedway in Fontana was the venue for "The 500", Round 18 of the CART Championship and the only 500-mile race of the season. A compelling and action-packed race began to unfold right from lap one, with Michael Andretti, fourth in qualifying, overtaking pole-sitter Tony Kanaan to steal the lead. Andretti and Kanaan were among the six front runners involved in a spectacular battle in the middle of the race, with Andretti moving into first place after the restart with seven laps remaining. A yellow flag was shown two laps later, however, followed by a red flag to suspend the race. The course was cleared and the race restarted with just two laps to go, and Andretti narrowly missed out on first place by 0.400 of a second.
