Podium for Michael Andretti in Second Place |
Round 9 of the CART championship was held at the special Burke Lakefront Airport course on Lake Erie, one of the five Great Lakes, in Cleveland, Ohio. After the green light was given at 1:44pm, Dario Franchitti, last year's winner and 3rd in this year's qualifying, quickly moved up into 2nd place. He was then handed 1st place on lap 19 when leader Cristiano da Matta had to retire with mechanical trouble. Franchitti was looking for his second consecutive victory, but mechanical problems of his own forced him to pull out on lap 69. Michael Andretti now found himself in 2nd place, which is where he stayed until the checkered flag to clinch his 7th ever podium finish at Cleveland. Behind him was Paul Tracy, putting Honda powered drivers second and third on the podium.
