ASIMO is busy at the moment throughout Asia. In August, ASIMO visited Taiwan for the first time. ASIMO's first appearance in front of the people of Taiwan wowed audiences with cutting-edge technologies, as well as with Honda's dreams for the future.
On 12th August, ASIMO debuted before an invited media audience at a special event in a hotel in North Taipei. The atmosphere at the event was charged from the beginning, with everyone keen to get their first encounter with ASIMO. ASIMO was welcomed to waves of flashing cameras, and at first, everyone was commenting on how smooth the robot walks on two legs. At the presenter's suggestion, ASIMO demonstrated the ability to walk in a figure of eight and to dance, amazing all the assembled media representatives. Next, ASIMO climbed up and came down stairs, also managing to stand on one foot at the top of the staircase in front of assembled reporters. Children at the event, which was organized by Honda Taiwan, were invited onto the stage to compete with ASIMO to see who could stand on one leg the longest. There were many children keen to come up on the stage to meet ASIMO, and all five of the children selected proved good competitors to ASIMO as they stood firmly on one leg.
The following day Taiwan's newspapers were full of reports about the bright future of technology interacting with people's lives, and the cutting edge functionality of ASIMO.
On 15th August ASIMO also appeared at the e-Generation Children's Digital EXPO, which is a showcase for future digital technologies. The event was held at the Taiwan World Trade Center, and on the first day, ASIMO participated as a guest at the awards ceremony, in which children who have demonstrated their own digital technologies were presented with awards.
Honda exhibited an ASIMO Pavilion at this event, containing a panel display showing the development of walking robots, as well as a craft corner for children. During the four days of the event, ASIMO made 22 appearances on the stage, and was able to meet around 12,000 Taiwanese people.
