ASIMO visited the Philippines between Tuesday 5th and Monday 25th August. The following is a report of ASIMO'S activities in the Philippines – from meeting children at invitation events to a meeting with President Arroyo.
ASIMO was first presented to the people of the Philippines on Saturday 9th August, at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. More than 100 journalists turned up to see ASIMO greet them and pose for photographs. During the four days from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th August, ASIMO took part in events at the Hotel Intercontinental Manila, to which many children from elementary school age upwards were invited.
More than 1000 children met ASIMO each day. ASIMO danced with elementary school students and took part in quizzes for high school pupils, in order to allow them to get to know more about ASIMO. During this time, the activities were filmed several times for television, and ASIMO was introduced to the people of the Philippines in various television and newspaper features.
On Tuesday 19th August, ASIMO attended the opening ceremony for Honda's new manual transmission plant at the Laguna Techno Park industrial estate outside of Manila. The transmissions manufactured at this plant will be used exported only to Asia but all through the world in Honda car plants.
The opening ceremony of this important manufacturing base was attended not only by ASIMO but also by President Gloria Arroyo. ASIMO shook hands with the president.
With many media representatives taking up ASIMO in their reports, the Filipino people were keen to meet ASIMO themselves. Their opportunity came at events on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, when ASIMO was presented to the public at the Mercarti Shangri La Manila Shopping Mall.
During the two days of these events, over 10,000 people visited the Mall, and spectators crowded even into the second and third floors of the open-plan mall in order to be able to watch ASIMO. ASIMO's debut in the Philippines was truly a great success.
